Books in the Wedding Tradition
Books have been an intricate part of the Human Experience since the first ones were written. As each generation brings their Wedding Event in to focus, they are finding more ways to integrate Books-old and new-in to their Celebration of Life.
The subject matter of a Book, or series of Books, can be the inspiration for the whole Wedding Theme. Fantasy books like Harry Potter or Alice in Wonderland, Fairy Tales and Chideren’s stories, The Hobbit and related stories. Just a few that are very popular. Literary standouts like Edgar Allen Poe or Shakespeare are also popular. And this extends to the worlds of Science Fiction and Anime.
Brides have a long tradition of using a Book as part of their Bridal bouquet. A family Bible, a treasured antique, a new volume, perhaps a gift recently received. It can be simply decorated with ribbon and loose flowers or entire Bouquet designed on the Book. The Book its self can be closed or open, though closed is preferred. You can also, attach a small Book to the Handle of the Bouquet or within the bouquet, both are a new and more modern design.
Not sold on a Book?
Then look to the Paper Flowers made from the printed pages of a Book. They can be from any kind of Book, older antique books, new titles familiar to the Bride or Groom, encyclopedias, maps, sheet music, many other choices. You can mix fresh flowers with the Paper flowers or add jeweled brooches for more bling. Continue the theme with the Boutonnières and Corsages and have these unique paper flowers throughout the Wedding Party.
Find these paper flowers pre-made on line in a variety of sizes, or they can be a DIY project with instructions also found on the internet.
For the Bridesmaids, You can look to the same options and more.
With a single Book carried by each Bridesmaid, they can be unadorned with only a book sleve or a simple lace ribbon tied on. There is also the Floral Purse design, to be carried by a handle.
The Flower Girl and Ring Bearer have their own special contribution to the the Theme. A single book decorated with lace ribbon and a flower, is perfect for the Flower Girl. A hollowed out book, decorated to hold the Wedding Rings or the traditional way of tying with ribbon to a book carried by the Ring Bearer.
The Ceremony can also reflect this Book Theme in the decorations of the Altar area. Books stacked to represent columns. An arch made of a variety bound books, a back drop of open books combined with flowers, fresh or silk. Another popular theme is the Open Page back drop that looks like a giant open book, 7 feet tall by 5 feet wide. A fairy tale dream.
At the Reception, the Book Theme comes to full view.
Start with the Guestbook Table, either a stack of books to Welcome the Guests or an arrangement similar to the Centerpieces on Guests Tables.
The Guest Table Centerpieces can be the focus on Books. Stacks of Books tied with ribbon and lace, candles, flowers in vases or loose for the casual effect. You can re-use the Bridesmaids “book” floral as centerpieces or accents on the Head Table. Bring the earthy woods in with moss covered books and fresh cut flowers. An enchanting theme.
An Open Book Centerpiece, uses the Book itself as the container for anything from fresh flowers, green plants, succulents, and more from Your imagination. They also make a lovely Guests gift to special people to take home and continue to enjoy.
Creative use of a Book begins with its pages. Carefully folded and cut, accented with beautiful paper flowers and butterflies. A very unique centerpiece.

Of all the Reception decorations the Cake stands out as the focal point, even after the Bride and Groom have arrive.
The Book Theme has challenged Bakers to take the traditional cake to fun, new designs. The traditional round tiers are transformed in to Books, stacked in to a beautiful tower of Cake. The simplicity of the Written word, placed upon the cake, can transform the Wedding Cake in to a token of Love.
Cupcakes, the delightful mini cake, can also given the book decorations to help pull the Book or Literary Theme through the Wedding Event.
