PROTEA:
an ancient flower whose pollen evidence suggests it grew 75-80 million years ago, found today in South Africa, Australia and South America. Named in 1735 for the greek God Proteus because of the wide variety of forms he could assume. KING PROTEA: lg flower head 6-8 inches across surrounded by longish pink petals and white to gray center on a stem of up to 40 inches, sold signally. found in two colors, pink and white. Very popular in bokays. Use in Ceremony and reception arrangements. QUEEN PROTEA: smaller head size (4-6inches) than a king protea, with spiky, short petals and a dramatic dark fuzzy center. PINK MINK + PINK ICE: flower is 3-4 inches across and about 5-6 inches long, rounded end, long petals with either black or white end hairs surround center in tulip shape. sold signally on stems of 15-18 inches. a white variety is available. PINCUSHION: a 3-4 inch flower head composed of multiple thin, stem like structures each with a small ball on the end. sold signally, found in red/orange, peach/salmon, pink, orange and yellow. commonly called “Baby’s Breath”, a cousin in the Carnation family, it is a sprawling or branching plant. Each stem branches intricately out to a 1/8 to 1/2 inch flower making multiple flowers per stem.
